In 2008 the idea of organizing competitions in Mexico is consolidated. Juan Verduzco and Alejandro Lemus come up with a plan to explore the potential of cenotes for freediving in Mexico; soon after the first AIDA Xibalba competition is carried out in the beautiful Cenote Azul, in Bacalar, Quintana Roo with great success.
More than 40 mexican and foreign freedivers gathered for this event, where new depth records were set in Mexico and in several countries of the Americas. This is how the Xibalba Freediving Competition was born, years later we moved to Yucatan in search of greater depth since the Cenote Azul was no longer deep enough for the level of the attending competitors.
